WASHINGTON - A raucous home atmosphere helped lead GW women's basketball to a 64-49 victory over Ivy League-favorite Princeton in Sunday's home opener at the Smith Center. An even more hyped environment is expected with No. 9/10 Maryland set to visit Foggy Bottom on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
A crowd of 1,528 packed the Smith Center on Sunday, the third-largest crowd in head coach Jennifer Rizzotti's tenure and the largest since February of 2017. The Colonials have won 45 of their last 57 games at the friendly confines at 22nd and G dating back to 2011, a record that includes a top-10 victory over #10/11 California in Nov. 2013.
The Terps are making a rare appearance in D.C., having visited GW just twice in their storied history, most recently in Nov. 2014. The then-#9/8 Terrapins found themselves down by one at the break before rallying for a 10-point victory over a GW bunch that would ultimately finish the season at 29-4 and earn a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Wednesday presents an opportunity for GW to claim the ninth top-10 victory in program history, three of which have come at the Smith Center. It also is an opportunity for Rizzotti's young but talented group to showcase itself against one of the nation's elite programs. The championship level of competition is something Rizzotti strives for with her program, having scheduled three straight preseason league favorites to open the season in James Madison, Princeton and Maryland. A fourth, Mercer, visits the Smith Center in December.
Maryland is 2-0 on the year with home victories against Coppin State and Dayton to begin their campaign. The Terps are the preseason pick to win the Big Ten, something they have accomplished three of the last four years. UMD has been to eight straight NCAA Tournament and has three Final Four appearances in the last 13 years, including winning the National Championship in 2006.
