Colonials set for first season under head coach Shane Winkler
WASHINGTON - George Washington softball announced its 2019 schedule Tuesday, highlighted by 27 home games and five non-conference tournaments with a pair on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW opens its first season under head coach Shane Winkler on Feb. 8 at the Gardner-Webb Tournament in Boiling Springs, N.C., with a matchup against District foe Georgetown. The regular season, which features 23 games against Atlantic 10 competition, wraps up May 5 at La Salle for the Colonials, who won a program-record 33 games last spring before closing at the A-10 Championship.
"We're excited for the upcoming season," Winkler said. "This team has grown a great deal during fall ball, and February can't get here soon enough.
"Our goal is to compete for an A-10 Championship and earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament, and I believe our schedule will prepare us to do just that. We have some tough tests early on the road and also get the opportunity to play a lot of games at home. This slate offers a nice balance for our team."
GW opens the 2019 schedule by playing five games over three days at Gardner-Webb. After taking a week off, the Colonials return to the Tar Heel State for the Campbell Invitational on Feb. 22-24.
The Buff and Blue's final road tournament of the spring is at North Carolina from March 1-3 with games against five different clubs, including clashes with the host Tar Heels and 2018 Southern Conference champion UNC Greensboro.
On March 5, GW kicks off its home schedule with a visit from crosstown opponent Howard for a midweek doubleheader. The Colonials will also host Morgan State (March 27) and Delaware State (April 3) for non-conference doubleheaders later in the season. They'll make the short trip to visit Big 10 foe Maryland for a single game March 18, as well.
GW gets set for A-10 play with two weekend tournaments at GW Softball Field, where the Buff and Blue went 19-7 in 2018.
The Colonial Classic, to be held March 8-10, features home matchups against Canisius, UMBC and Manhattan. The Colonials host Stony Brook, Oakland and Georgetown for the Buff and Blue Challenge from March 15-17.
The A-10 slate begins on the Vern with a three-game series against six-time defending conference champion Fordham (March 23-24).
GW also hosts weekend conference series against Saint Louis (April 6-7) and Dayton (April 27-28), plus a midweek doubleheader against Revolutionary Rival George Mason on April 17. The Colonials will celebrate Senior Day on April 28 before a noon start against Dayton.
The A-10 road trips include series at Saint Joseph's (March 30-31), Massachusetts (April 13-14), St. Bonaventure (April 19-20) and La Salle (May 4-5).
The 2018 A-10 Championship will be held May 8-11 at UMass Softball Complex in Amherst, Mass., with the top six teams in the league standings competing for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
