GW forces 22 turnovers leading to 31 points in defensive showcase
WASHINGTON – On Veterans Day at the Charles E. Smith Center, GW Athletics got the day started by welcoming and celebrating women in the military. GW also distributed some bling prior to its home opener, with members of the 2017-18 A-10 Championship and NCAA Tournament team overseeing a banner unveiling and the awarding of championship rings.
Befitting of the pregame full of emotion, the current Colonials then handled their business against Princeton, a team that was receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches' Poll as the preseason favorites to win the Ivy League after topping the conference last year and advancing to the NCAA Tournament. In the match-up of two teams that went dancing last year, GW emerged as the easy victor, 64-49.
After surging out to a touchdown advantage after the opening quarter, 16-9, GW extended its edge to open the second, using an 11-0 run spanning the quarters to take a double-digit lead.
Making her Smith Center debut, Chevy Chase, Md., native and transfer student Sarah Overcash contributed six points in the early going (nine points, 10 rebounds overall), while senior captain Mei-Lyn Bautista showed why she's heralded as among the conference's premier players. With four early steals (five for the game), Bautista keyed the defensive intensity that kept Princeton flummoxed all game. After notching 89 points in their opener, the Tigers struggled from the floor against GW's harassing D, to the tune of just 20-of-69 shooting (.290) from the floor, including a paltry 7-of-38 (.184) from three-point range.
A 27-18 edge at the halftime break was quickly extended to 38-18 in the opening minutes of the third, capped by back-to-back triples from Lexus Levy, and from there the rout was on. While Princeton would attempt to make it a game, and found some success drawing within single digits, GW always found the stops when it needed, as the Colonials won every quarter, and Bautista (game-high 15 points) took charge offensively.
Behind Bautista, Levy's 13 points, Overcash's nine, and first-year Kayla Mokwuah -- who netted eight in her Smith Center debut -- the Colonials showcased plenty of offensive balance. It was GW's defense, though, that proved to be its best offense as the home team got nearly half of its points off Princeton turnovers, parlaying 22 Tigers' miscues into 31 on the scoreboard on the other end.
After opening the season with back-to-back contests against preseason conference favorites in their respective leagues with James Madison and Princeton, the toughest early season challenge awaits when Big Ten preseason favorite and top-10 Maryland comes to GW on Wednesday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
