First-year setter earns first career honor after first two starts

WASHINGTON- GW first-year setter Heather Merryman earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors for the week of Oct. 1-7, it was announced on Monday. This is the first career accolade for the Farifax, Va. native.

Merryman made the first two starts of her career over the weekend, stepping in for regular setter Jaimeson Lee. Merryman made the most of the opportunity, posting 71 assists (10.14/set) across the two matches and added 12 digs, two service aces, and a block. The 10.14 average would rank second in the league if she had enough sets to qualify.

On Friday against Rhode Island, Merryman dished out 35 assists as the Colonials hit .275 as a team in three-set sweep, the second-highest mark of the year. Merryman followed that up with 36 assists and eight digs in Saturday's match against Fordham.

GW returns to action with a non-conference matchup tomorrow at home against West Virginia. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
