Colonials wrap up A-10 road slate vs. Billikens
George Washington men's soccer travels to Saint Louis on Saturday for its final Atlantic 10 road contest of the regular season.
The Colonials (5-7-3, 1-3-2 A-10) are aiming to improve their position in the race for a spot in the A-10 Championship as they face off against the Billikens in a 3 p.m. start at Hermann Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: GW fell at UMBC, 3-1, on Tuesday in its final non-conference matchup of the regular season. Dylan Lightbourn's goal in the 69th minute, set up by Marcelo Lage and Tyler Jankowski, provided the offense for the Colonials against the Retrievers.Jason Re tallied four saves in his first career start in net for the Buff and Blue.
STANDINGS CHECK: With five points, GW sits in 12th place in the A-10 standings with an opportunity to play its way into the eight-team field for the conference championship over the final week of the regular season.
The Colonials are currently three points back of Saint Joseph's and Duquesne, which are tied for seventh in the crowded table.
Saint Louis (nine points) is tied for fifth with George Mason and could clinch a spot in the conference championship Saturday with a victory over the Colonials.
EXCELLENT ADDITIONS: Jankowski, a first-year midfielder from Germany, picked up his first career point Tuesday with his assist on Lightbourn's goal. He's the sixth GW newcomer to tally a point this season. The group also includes transfers Haukur Hilmarsson (six points) and Max Holdsworth (four) and first-years Lage (four), Alhaji Turay (one) and Sam Reavis (one).
All 10 new additions to the roster for the 2018 season have seen action in at least five games in their first fall in Buff and Blue.
HISTORIC HÖFS: Thor Arne Höfs had made 40 consecutive starts for GW dating back to 2016 before resting Tuesday at UMBC.
The senior goalkeeper currently has recorded 253 saves for his career and needs just one more to tie Ward McIntyre for No. 5 on GW's all-time list. He became the program's all-time shutouts leader in a win over St. Bonaventure on Oct. 10 and added to his total with the 22nd clean sheet of his career last week in a scoreless draw at Fordham.
SCOUTING SAINT LOUIS: The Billikens (5-3-6, 2-1-3) dropped a non-conference contest at No. 11 Denver, 2-1, on Tuesday, despite John Klein's team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Saint Louis has gotten it done with defense this season, yielding just 17 goals through 14 games. A trio of keepers - Seth Stiebel, Ty Frederking and Ben Yeager - have split time in net for the Billikens, who are set to host the final two rounds of the A-10 Championship next month.
GW has won back-to-back games in the series, including a 1-0 double-overtime victory at Hermann Stadium in 2015 to clinch the A-10 regular season title.
COMING UP: GW closes the regular season next Wednesday at home against Massachusetts. It's a 2 p.m. kickoff on the Mount Vernon Campus.
