Colonials picked to finish tied for third in Atlantic 10 preseason poll
WASHINGTON – George Washington women's basketball senior point guard Mei-Lyn Bautista was named to the preseason Atlantic 10 all-conference second team and all-defensive team, it was announced on Tuesday. The defending tournament champion Colonials were projected to finish in a tie for third in the preseason poll conducted by the league's coaches.
Bautista, a native of Queens, N.Y., earns her first career preseason honor after a junior campaign that culminated with an Atlantic 10 All-Championship team designation. She was perfect for GW in the run to the A-10 title, compiling 26 assists with zero turnovers in the four games of the championship.
Overall, Bautista averaged single-season bests in points (8.1), rebounds (1.8), assists (4.3) and steals (2.2) during her junior season. She was 14th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.39) and is one of just three active players in the nation to appear in at least 60 games the last two years while recording 200 or more assists and 100 or fewer turnovers. She registered 20 games with one turnover or less a year ago.
The Colonials, winners of three of the last four A-10 tournaments, were picked to finish in a tie for third with Fordham in this year's preseason poll. Duquesne (194 points) received 12 first place votes and was tabbed the preseason favorite, followed by Dayton (183), which earned the other two first place votes. GW and Fordham received 159 points each, followed by Saint Joseph's (112) , VCU (108), Saint Louis (104) and George Mason (102), which were separated by just 10 points.
Massachusetts (90) was projected ninth, followed by Richmond (87), Davidson (72), St. Bonaventure (46), Rhode Island (31) and La Salle (23) rounding out the poll.
GW will encounter both Duquesne and Dayton twice during the regular season, as well as George Mason. Overall, the Buff and Blue will face 14 different teams that made either the NCAA Tournament or the WNIT a year ago, accounting for 17 of the squad's 29 games.
The season opens up on Thursday, Nov. 8 at James Madison with the home opener scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. against Princeton.
