The Colonials also won the Central Late Fall Regatta and took third at a Coed Showcase
The GW sailing team posted strong results at a trio of regattas last weekend as the Colonials took a victory at the Central Late Fall Regatta while placing third at both the MAISA Women's Championship and the Truxtun Umsted Coed Showcase.
The top event of the weekend, the MAISA Women's Championship came down to the final race with host Cornell edging Hobart and William Smith and GW for the win. Just three points separated the three teams as Cornell finish with 87 points followed by HWS (89) and GW (90). The Colonials rotated four sailors - skipper Riley Legault with crews Alexandra Fayer, Emma Mendenhall and Sarah Noyes – to win A Division, and in all six sailors contributed to the overall third place finish.
"It was a really good event for us," said head coach Billy Martin. "All the teamwork really came together and the crew work was just fantastic, really kept us in the game. The boats were very unique and tough to transition to and we sailed with a lot of different combinations. That's a big testament to everyone be able to adjust and I'm really proud of how everyone performed. In particular the team in A Division really looked strong the entire event. They looked really fast and put up great scores, so it's great for them to finish the season strong."
GW also fared well at the Coed Showcase hosted by Navy, finishing behind St. Mary's and the Midshipmen in the 19-team regatta. First-year skipper Matt Logue, along with classmate Cameron Feves, sophomore Tanner Chapko and junior Michael Houllahan, helped the Colonials take a second-place finish in B Division.
"We sailed a bunch of different people and the highlight was first-year skippers in B Division doing very well in their division at an interconference regatta," said Martin. "The coed team is going to be cooking going into our final week."
Meanwhile, the Colonials showed off their depth by winning the Central Late Fall Regatta hosted by Washington College. GW dominated the 18 team field by posting a score of 36, well clear of second place Navy (76). The quartet of Andrew Bennett, Ryan Janov, Cassondra Parker and Taylor Milefchik combined to win six of 10 races while claiming first in A Division. In B Division, the Colonials also took first on the strength of five first-place finishes with the crew of Michael Ehont, Matthew Priebe, Chiara Perotti Correa and Keily Gleason.
The Colonials are set to close the season with the MAISA Coed Championship, Oct. 27-28, and the ICSA Singlehanded National Championships, Nov. 3-4.
"On the whole we had two thirds and a first at three different events using 22 sailors and that's the team we're going to continue to go with," said Martin. "We're so deep and competitive and I'm really looking forward to finishing off the coed season next week and heading to nationals with Riley [Legault] in two weeks."
