Colonials swing through La Salle Friday, Duquesne Sunday
WASHINGTON - GW volleyball continues its four-game road trip this weekend with two matches in Pennsylvania. The Colonials face La Salle on Friday at 7 p.m. before heading to Duquesne on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.
LAST WEEKEND: The Colonials dropped a pair of four-set affairs last weekend at Davidson and VCU. The weekend marked the return of Jaimeson Lee and Skylar Iott to the lineup, but the squad was unable to overcome a tough offensive showing with 35-plus attacking errors in each match.
ACROSS THE NET: These are the only matchups of the season for GW against La Salle and Duquesne. GW played the two teams twice last season, sweeping La Salle and splitting with Duquesne.
The Explorers have dropped consecutive conference matches after a 4-1 start to league play, including a 3-1 setback to Duquesne last Friday. The Colonials own an impressive 41-2 mark all-time against La Salle and have won 15 straight matches dating back to 2007. The Explorers are one of the top defensive teams in the league with an A-10-leading 17.47 digs/set, headlined by Jensen Sharrits, who paces the league with 5.58 digs/set.
Duquesne has won three straight matches overall and back-to-back conference games entering the weekend. The Dukes are also strong defensively with 16.34 digs/set, the second-best total in the circuit. Camryn Vecera averages 5.05 digs/set, second-most in the league. The teams split a pair of four-set matches last season, each winning on their home floor.
WELCOME BACK: After dealing with nagging ailments that held them out of competition, GW returned the services of its starting setter Lee and starting outside hitter Iott last weekend. Lee averaged 9.0 assists/set and added her typical all-around game with 11 digs and four blocks. Iott tallied 13 kills in each of the two matches and also posted her 11th double-double of the season on Sunday at VCU.
FIVE-SET PHENOMS: Four of GW's eight victories this season have been five-set wins, but the Colonials have not played in a five-set match since pulling out an improbable comeback against Morgan State on Sept. 14. Dating back to last year, the Colonials have triumphed in eight straight five-set matches and are now 9-2 in those situations under second-year head coach Sarah Bernson.
TOURNAMENT PICTURE: The Colonials will aim to snap a three-game conference skid this weekend and move back into playoff positioning. GW is just a game out of the top-six that qualify for the league tournament with the sixth spot currently held by Duquesne. There are currently seven teams within two games of third place with four weeks remaining in the regular season.
AMONG LEAGUE LEADERS: Here's where the Colonials stand among A-10 foes entering the weekend:
