Volleyball Knocked Off by First-Place VCU

Iott records 11th double-double of the season
Richmond, Va. – GW volleyball took a set off first-place VCU on Sunday at the Siegel Center before ultimately suffering a four-set defeat at the hands of the Rams.
VCU 3, GW 1 (21-25, 16-25, 25-23, 17-25)
Key Stats
• Junior Skylar Iott paced GW (8-11, 2-5) with 13 kills and 10 digs on the afternoon, her 11th double-double of the season.
• VCU (12-7, 7-0) won its 23rd consecutive game against conference competition, buoyed by a 16.0-5.0 edge in blocks.
• Senior Kelsey Clark hit .241 with 12 kills, also adding five digs and two blocks.
• The Colonials were out-hit on the afternoon by a .139 (41k-24e-122a) to .007 (37k-36e-147a) margin.

Set 1: VCU 25, GW 21
• The Rams broke open an early stalemate with a 6-0 run that put them up 16-11.
• GW rebounded to get within one at 22-21 before VCU finished off the first-set triumph with three straight points.
Set 2: VCU 25, GW 16
• VCU grabbed a two-set lead with a strong attacking set, hitting .375 with just two attack errors.
• A 7-2 run in the mid-point of the stanza opened up a seven-point lead for the home team that they would not relinquish.
Set 3: GW 25, VCU 23
• The Colonials persevered through the adversity to come from behind and take the third set, extending the match.
• GW trailed 23-21 before rattling off four straight points spurred by a service ace from Heather Merryman.
Set 4: VCU 25, GW 17
• VCU's blocking prowess was evident as the Rams racked up six blocks to put the match away in four sets.
• GW had closed to within three at 19-16 before VCU finished the match with a 6-1 run.
