Colonials seek second home A-10 win of the week
George Washington men's soccer welcomes VCU to the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday afternoon, seeking its second home Atlantic 10 victory of the week.
The Colonials are celebrating GW Soccer Alumni Weekend in conjunction with the women's squad. Saturday's festivities include a joint alumni game starting at 11 a.m. and a postgame social on the Vern.
LAST TIME OUT: GW (5-5-1, 1-2) rolled past St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, 4-0, with a convincing effort on both ends.
Thor Arne Höfs stymied the Bonnies to post his 21st career shutout in net to take over sole possession of the program record. Oscar Haynes Brown scored twice to pad his A-10 leading total, and Haukur Hilmarsson and Brady O'Connor recorded three points apiece in the victory.
GOALS GALORE: With 20 goals in 11 games, GW ranks third in the A-10 in scoring average. In Wednesday's victory, the Colonials scored four goals in a conference game for the first time since the 2011 season. The Colonials kept the pressure on throughout, outshooting the Bonnies, 23-8, and forcing keeper Luke Iacobellis to make 11 saves. They also have a 6-0 win over American (Aug. 27) on their resume, which was the most goals they've scored in a game under head coach Craig Jones.
OSCAR'S OFFENSE: After his two-goal effort Wednesday, Haynes Brown sits third nationally in goals per game (1.10) and fifth in total goals (11). The sophomore has also recorded a pair of assists for 24 total points to rank seventh, as well. All three of those figures lead the Atlantic 10.
Haynes Brown is the first Colonial to reach double-figure scoring since Yoni Berhanu scored 11 times in the 2011 season. He needs one more goal to break into the top 10 on the program's all-time single-season scoring list. Matthew Osborne (2002) and Mario Lone (1989) share the program record with 19 goals.
SCOUTING VCU: After three straight wins to open their A-10 slate, the Rams (7-4-1, 3-0-1) battled Saint Louis to a scoreless draw on Wednesday.
Behind the goalkeeping of Mario Sequeira, VCU has yet to allow a goal in conference play. Siad Haji is the reigning A-10 Offensive Player of the Week after factoring in all four goals in wins over Massachusetts and Duquesne last week. The junior midfielder leads the squad with 17 points via five goals and seven assists.
GW won last season's meeting in Richmond, 2-1, behind goals from Oliver Curry and Dylan Lightbourn. They played to a 2-2 tie in the Rams' last trip to the Vern in 2016.
COMING UP: The Colonials have a Wednesday road trip to Fordham on tap next week before returning home to face La Salle on Oct. 20 for Senior Day at 2 p.m.
WATCH THIS: Hear from Jones, Peirce Williams and Alhaji Turay before Saturday's matchup with VCU.
