Colonials came up short vs. VCU on Saturday
WASHINGTON – Haukur Hilmarsson scored his second goal in as many games to give GW men's soccer a second-half lead, but VCU rallied to claim a 2-1 win Saturday in an Atlantic 10 contest on the Mount Vernon Campus.
GW (5-6-1, 1-3 A-10) broke through in the 54th minute on Hilmarsson's blast off a rebound before the Rams (8-4-1, 4-0-1) equalized in the 78th minute and went ahead on Peter Pearson's 89th-minute goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 54th Minute: VCU keeper Mario Sequeira punched away Alhaji Turay's screaming shot, but Hilmarsson raced in from the right side to send home the rebound and put the Colonials on top. (GW 1, VCU 0)
- 78th Minute: Martin Ngoh ran on to Eli Lockaby's cross for the game-tying goal. (GW 1, VCU 1)
- 89th Minute: With overtime looming, VCU found the game-winner with Pearson scoring off a feed from Ngoh. (VCU 2, GW 1)
NOTEWORTHY
- Hilmarsson's goal was the first allowed by VCU in five A-10 games. The graduate student from Iceland has totaled five points in his past two games. After entering the week with one point, he is now tied for second among Colonials with six points.
- Turay tallied his first career point with the assist. Oscar Haynes Brown also picked up an assist on the play to push his A-10 leading point total to 25. The goal sequence accounted for two of GW's three shots on target.
- Thor Arne Höfs finished with eight saves, tallying four in each half.
- A host of former Colonials were on hand for GW Soccer Alumni Weekend, which included an alumni game Saturday morning.
