Colonials and Rams played to a scoreless draw Wednesday
BRONX, N.Y. – George Washington men's soccer battled Fordham to a scoreless draw Wednesday at Jack Coffey Field to secure a point in the Atlantic 10 standings on the road.
The Colonials and Rams played through 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods without a breakthrough. Thor Arne Höfs recorded six saves for the Buff and Blue to earn the clean sheet.
GW moves to 5-6-2 overall and 1-3-1 in A-10 play with three regular season games remaining after the tie against Fordham (6-3-4, 2-2-1).
NOTEWORTHY
- Höfs, who became the program's all-time shutouts leader last week, recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season and the 22nd of his career. The senior goalkeeper made three saves in each half before not facing any shots on target in extra time.
Höfs made back-to-back nice stops on Janos Loebe in the first half. First, he denied a knuckling free kick in the 21st minute before shutting down a breakaway chance three minutes later. The game ended with the Rams putting the last of their 16 shots just over the crossbar.
- GW had its chances, producing 13 shots. Oscar Haynes Brown had another active night, putting two of his team-high six attempts on target. Colin Anderson had the other shot on goal for the Colonials via a header in the first overtime.
Perhaps GW's best scoring chance came in the 83rd minute when Drini Redzepi made a lengthy run down the left side before slotting his shot just outside the right post.
- GW outshot Fordham, 5-4, in overtime and had the only try on net over the final 20 minutes.
- It was GW's fifth overtime game of the season. The Colonials are 1-2-2 in contests that extend beyond 90 minutes. It was their first A-10 draw since a 2-2 deadlock with VCU on Oct. 5, 2016.
UP NEXT: GW is back at the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday for Senior Day against La Salle. The pregame ceremony honoring the squad's five seniors is slated to begin at 1:45 p.m.
