Colonials continue A-10 play against the Rams
LAST TIME OUT: GW (5-6-1, 1-3) dropped a 2-1 decision to first-place VCU on Saturday. Haukur Hilmarsson's goal put the Colonials in front in the 54th minute, but the Rams equalized in the 78th minute and went ahead on Peter Pearson's 89th-minute goal.
COMING ON STRONG: Against VCU, Hilmarsson blasted in the rebound off a shot by Alhaji Turay for his second goal in as many games. It was the first goal allowed by the Rams in their five A-10 contests. The graduate student from Iceland also tallied a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure. After entering the week with one point, he is now tied for second on the squad with six points.
OSCAR'S OFFENSE: Haynes Brown was credited with an assist on Hilmarsson's goal on Saturday for his 25th point of the season. With 11 goals and three assists in through 11 games, the sophomore from England ranks fifth nationally in points per game (2.27). He's also fifth in the country in goals per game (1.00) and seventh in total goals. All of those figures lead the Atlantic 10.
Haynes Brown is the first Colonial to reach double-figure scoring since Yoni Berhanu scored 11 times in the 2011 season. He needs one more goal to break into the top 10 on the program's all-time single-season scoring list. Matthew Osborne (2002) and Mario Lone (1989) share the program record with 19 goals.
SHOT STOPPER: With eight saves against VCU, Thor Arne Höfs moved into the A-10 lead with 54 stops on the season, two ahead of Joseph Boehm of Saint Joseph's. The senior netminder tied his career high with nine stops in a scoreless draw against then-No. 15 Duke on Sept. 25. He became the program's all-time shutouts leader when he blanked St. Bonaventure last week for the 21st clean sheet of his career.
SCOUTING FORDHAM: The Rams are seeking their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after a run to the national quarterfinals in 2017.
Fordham sit at 6-3-3 overall and 2-2 in A-10 play after Saturday's 1-0 loss to Massachusetts on its home field. Janos Loebe ranks third in the conference with 18 points via four goals and 10 assists, while Rashid Nuhu has had a strong senior season between the pipes with a 1.02 goals against average.
This is the first meeting for the clubs since playing to a scoreless tie in the District on Oct. 1, 2016. Höfs made five saves for the Colonials to preserve the deadlock.
COMING UP: The Colonials return to the Mount Vernon Campus on Saturday for Senior Day against La Salle. The pregame ceremony honoring Alastair Berry, Alexy Boehm, Thor Arne Höfs, Jason Re and Dylan Lightbourn is set to begin at 1:45 p.m.
