WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thor Arne Höfs became the GW men's soccer program's all-time shutout leader Wednesday with a 4-0 blanking of St. Bonaventure.
The senior goalkeeper picked up his 21st career shutout as part of an impressive effort on both ends from the Colonials (5-5-1, 1-2) to beat the Bonnies (5-5-1, 2-2) on the Mount Vernon Campus for their first Atlantic 10 victory of the season.
Oscar Haynes Brown paced the Buff and Blue attack. The sophomore from England scored once in each half and set up another tally by drawing a penalty kick. He now has 11 goals and 24 points this season to pace the A-10.
Brady O'Connor and Haukur Hilmarsson also scored for the Colonials, who scored their most goals in an A-10 victory since the 2011 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 22nd Minute: Haynes Brown put the Colonials on top. He received a cross from Hilmarsson in the center of the field and found space in traffic to curl a left-footed shot inside the left post. (GW 1, St. Bonaventure 0)
- 58th Minute: Haynes Brown earned a penalty kick after getting taken down in the box. O'Connor stepped up and blasted his attempt into the right side of the net for his second goal of the season. (GW 2, St. Bonaventure 0)
- 74th Minute: Haynes Brown took a pass from O'Connor behind the defense and chipped the keeper for his second goal of the day. (GW 3, St. Bonaventure 0)
- 85th Minute: Hilmarsson finished the scoring with his first goal as a Colonial. The graduate student from Iceland took a pass from Max Holdsworth and raced in from the right side before finishing at close range. (GW 4, St. Bonaventure 0)
NOTEWORTHY
- GW outshot St. Bonaventure, 23-8, and forced Bonnies keeper Luke Iacobellis to make 11 saves. It was the most goals the Colonials have scored in an A-10 game since a 4-0 home win over Saint Joseph's on Oct. 7, 2011.
- Höfs needed to make just one save en route to the shutout, though the veteran netminder dealt with a decent amount of pressure throughout the game, including seven St. Bonaventure corner kicks. It was his fourth clean sheet of the season.
- Haynes Brown became the first Colonial to hit double-figure scoring in a season since Yoni Berhanu scored 11 times in 2011. The high-scoring forward was constantly threatening against the Bonnies, putting nine of his career-high 13 shots on net. He had one first-half attempt cleared off the line by a defender and another in the second half hit the crossbar.
- Hilmarsson and O'Connor tallied three points apiece to set career highs. O'Connor improved to 4-for-4 in his career on penalty kicks.
- After setting up Hilmarsson's goal, Holdsworth is now third on the club with three assists for the season.
- Alhaji Turay made his first career start in the GW midfield. The first-year from Maryland logged 69 minutes against the Bonnies.
UP NEXT: GW is back at the Vern on Saturday, hosting VCU on Saturday for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Alumni Day. The festivities include an alumni game at 11 a.m. and a postgame social.
