WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team wraps the regular season with a three-game series against Atlantic 10 foe Rhode Island at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus beginning on Saturday. Sunday's series finale will feature a Senior Day ceremony prior to first pitch.
The Colonials (26-23, 9-11 A-10) are fighting for a spot in the six-team A-10 Championship, entering the weekend in seventh place. GW took two-of-three games at Saint Joseph's last weekend. Rhode Island (10-31, 7-13 A-10) ranks ninth in the league.
Seniors Megan Linn and Paige Kovalsky will close stellar careers at the GW Softball Field over the weekend. Linn ranks second on the team with a .362 average and sits second in the A-10 with 27 stolen bases - just four away from snapping her own single-season program record of 30. Kovalsky's .336 average ranks fourth on the squad, and her 17 doubles leads the A-10.
Freshman Jenna Cone continues to lead GW in most offensive categories. Her .385 average is tops on the team and ranks fourth in the A-10, while her 18 home runs is a single-season record for the Colonials.
The Buff and Blue need two wins to set a new program record for wins, currently held by the 2013 team's 27 triumphs.
The Rams have won four of their last six games - all in A-10 play - most recently taking two-of-three games from St. Bonaventure. URI enters the weekend with a 6.90 team ERA, allowing opposing hitters to bat .330 with 39 long balls. Offensively, the Rams bat .246.
The Colonials took two of three at Rhode Island a year ago and lead the all-time series, 19-9.
