WASHINGTON -- Clifford Thompson, a native of Broederstroom, South Africa, has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend GW, head golf coach Chuck Scheinost announced Monday.
Thompson has put together a decorated prep career, having won his men's club championship at 14 years old and currently ranking as the No. 1 player in his region. He won four tournaments in 2016 and has been a part of the Ernie Els Fancourt Foundation for the last four years.
"We are very excited to have Clifford join our program in the fall," said head coach Chuck Scheinost. "He has a tremendous work ethic and it shows in his golf game. He is a very consistent player with the ability to also take it low. After getting to know him over the past year I feel he will be a great fit with our team and help push us as we continue to reach for new heights as a program."
In 2016, Thompson finished second at the National Junior South African Order of Merit Championship, and in 72 rounds over the past two seasons has a 73.65 scoring average with 10 rounds in the 60s.
"I have always dreamed of playing golf in America, it's just come a bit earlier than expected thanks to Coach Scheinost," said Thompson. "I am excited to attend George Washington University because of the university's great academic reputation and I hope to help grow the university's golf program."
This fall, Thompson will join a team that returns all five of its players that competed in the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship, where GW finished fourth.
