WASHINGTON -- The George Washington lacrosse team dropped an Atlantic 10 game to the Richmond Spiders, 17-6, Friday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field.
Jocelyn Donohue scored twice to lead the Colonials, including an unassisted goal just 15 seconds into the game that gave GW its only lead. Richmond responded with three goals over the next 18 minutes as a defensive struggle consumed much of the first half.
The Colonials would answer to draw within a goal when Michaela Lynch scored at the 7:50 mark, and after another Richmond strike, GW made it 4-3 on Katie Quinn's goal with 5:11 to play. The game then experienced a one hour, seven minute delay with 2:51 remaining in the half due to a malfunctioning shot clock, and the Spiders took over after play resumed. The Spiders scored twice before a brief halftime intermission, and built their lead to 9-3 before Donohue struck for her second goal with 21:05 remaining.
Richmond (8-3, 3-0 A-10), though, continued to control the match as it held a 35-19 advantage in shots and 19-6 margin in draw controls, while converting 4-of-9 free position opportunities. Sam Geiersbach led the Spiders with six goals while Natalia Chaney and Kim Egizi each registered a hat trick.
The Colonials (2-8, 1-2 A-10) return to action on Sunday when they travel to Philadelphia to face La Salle at 3 p.m.
