Against a strong interconference field at the women's Dellenbaugh Trophy, the GW sailing team battled back after a tough first day to take 11th place in the 18-team field.
Teams were met by adverse sailing conditions on Saturday, with strong winds at 15-25 knots, a wintry mix and at time heavy rains, limiting the competition to just four races in A Division and two in B Division.
On Sunday, warmer and sunnier conditions allowed for four races in A Division and six in B Division, and the Colonials were able to take advantage of the opportunity. In B Division, freshmen Aitana Mendiguren and Sarah Noyes capitalized with five top-10 finishes on the day, highlighted by a victory in race six, to finish seventh overall in their division.
In A Division, Miranda Bakos, Emma Mendenhall and Belle Strachan took two fifth-place finishes out of their four races on the day to move from 17th place to 15th.
"It was the most competitive women's fleet we've seen this semester," said head coach Billy Martin. "It was extremely windy and tough conditions overall to start, which pushed the girls hard. After a disappointing first day we were able to grind back into 11th overall. The events in New England are really tough but we were able to take away some valuable learning lessons and continue to get sharper as we get closer to conference championships."
GW is back in action this weekend with championship racing in the form of the Prosser Trophy at Suny Maritime, which serves as the MAISA Team Race Championship, where the top four teams in the field qualify for ICSA Nationals. The women's team will also be in action at the Emily Wick Trophy at Connecticut College.
