ORLANDO -- Former GW star Patricio Garino, who has spent this season playing for the Austin Spurs in the NBA Development League, has been called up by the Orlando Magic, the organization announced Monday.
Garino will immediately join the Magic, who have five games remaining in the regular season, starting Tuesday night when they visit the defending champion Cleveland Cavaliers at 7 p.m.
"I am proud of Pato and even more excited for his future because his best basketball is still ahead of him," said head coach Maurice Joseph. "His dedication and work ethic has gotten him to this point but it is his unmatched passion for the game that will allow him to succeed at the next level. He is and always will be a Colonial but today we celebrate the next step in Pato's journey with the Orlando Magic organization!"
In 49 games with the Austin Spurs -- 46 of them starts -- Garino averaged 11.2 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals, while shooting .467 from the field and .430 from three-point range. Prior to that, Garino played in four preseason games with the San Antonio Spurs, and during the summer league last year played for the Orlando Magic White team.
At GW, Garino was the school's second-ever three-time member of the Atlantic 10 All-Defensive team and had career averages of 12.0 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.7 steals. As a senior, he led the A-10 in three-point shooting, averaged 14.1 points and helped GW win the Postseason NIT Championship. He ranks third in school history in steals (220) and games played (129), and 11th in scoring (1,150).
