FAIRFAX, Va. -- Despite a four-goal performance from senior Michaela Lynch, the George Washington lacrosse team dropped a close one to George Mason, 11-9, Thursday night at George Mason Stadium.
Lynch scored her first goal just 56 seconds into the game to give GW one of its two leads, the other coming when Jocelyn Donohue connected just over a minute later to make it 2-1 Colonials. George Mason would uncork a 5-0 run after that, to build a 6-2 lead with 10:36 remaining in the first half, but GW battled back within one at halftime thanks to goals from Lynch, Bailey Forcier, Donohue and Cassidy Shollenberger.
After the intermission, the Patriots struck for three straight goals to make it 10-6 in favor of the hosts, and though GW answered with goals from Brooke Sands and Lynch, a two-goal deficit would be as close as the Colonials could get.
With a goal and assist, Forcier reached the 100-point plateau for her career. For Mason, Alexa McGovern scored a game-high six goals and Lindsey Tangeman added two.
A quick turnaround awaits GW, which returns home Saturday to host VCU at the GW Lacrosse Field at 1 p.m. Prior to the game, the Colonials will celebrate their eight graduating seniors with a ceremony.
