WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team reached the 20-win plateau on Tuesday with a pair of victories over visiting Delaware State at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (20-17) saw a complete game effort from junior Sarah Costlow to start the day with a 3-2 win before a shutout-by-committee in the nightcap, 5-0.
GW struck first in game one when junior Rochelle Draper singled through the left side to begin the third and advanced to third on a double from reigning A-10 Player of the Week Megan Linn. A single from freshman Priscilla Martinez then gave the Colonials a 1-0 lead.
Delaware State took the edge in the top of the fifth, scoring two on two hits to move ahead, 2-1.
The Buff and Blue quickly answered in the bottom of the frame when three consecutive two-out doubles from reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Jenna Cone, Martinez and senior Paige Kovalsky scored two as GW regained the lead, 3-2.
The Colonials then held the Hornets scoreless to come away with the triumph.
Costlow (8-6, 2.25 ERA) tossed her 12th complete game of the season, holding Delaware State to five hits without allowing a walk.
GW tallied eight hits, led by two-hit games from Martinez and Kovalsky.
In game two, GW again scored first. An error before a single from Kovalsky plated one in the second before Kovalsky stole third and scored on a bunt from junior Morgan Rinehart.
The Colonials added another in the third with the help of a Delaware State miscue. Linn singled then stole second and drew an errant throw from the catcher while swiping third to score and give GW a 3-0 advantage.
Rookie Gabby Gallone singled in the fifth before a two-base throwing error by the Hornets' pitcher in the fifth allowed her to score. GW plated its final run in the sixth, again as the result of an error.
Delaware State was unable to rally in the seventh as the Colonials came away with the 5-0 victory.
Sophomore Jayme Cone (2-2, 4.80 ERA) earned the win with three innings in relief of freshman Kaitlin Buff. Junior Ashley Pilcher came in to close the game, throwing one inning of shutout ball.
Rinehart led the offense in game two, tallying two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
The Buff and Blue continue a seven-game homestand on Friday when A-10 foe Saint Louis comes to town for the first two games of a three-game series beginning at noon.
