Sailing Gains Experience Over the Weekend

With an eye on getting as much experience as possible in the second weekend of the spring season, the GW sailing team recorded solid results in a pair of regattas last weekend.
Hosting the GW Team Race at the Washington Sailing Marina, the weekend also served as friends and family weekend and GW's seniors were honored at a team event on Friday night. Meanwhile, a portion of the team headed to Charleston, S.C. -- which will host this year's Nationals -- to compete in the Bob Bavier Team Race.
"This whole weekend was about getting early-season reps for a lot of sailors," said head coach Billy Martin. "At the GW Team Race we ended up getting in 20 races with 10 different people, and while we only finished fourth out of six teams it was still a lot of really good reps against high quality competition. Our top team was in Charleston and did really well, finishing fifth of 10 teams. I think that was a really strong showing at the course that will host Nationals, and we ended up using eight sailors at that event and did a lot of different combinations."
In Washington, teams sailed in sunny yet cold and breezy conditions on Saturday, completing 33 races, before a full three round robins were completed on Sunday. GW finished behind Hobart & Williams Smith, Georgetown and Fordham while outpacing Old Dominion and St. Mary's. The 10 Colonials seeing action were skippers Sam White, Wade Wagner, Daniel DelBello, Rhodes Garner and Colin Kennedy, and crews Sara Noyes, Gabriella Malek, Gabriella Marki, Zach Lehan and Marshall McCraw.
At the Bob Bavier Team Race, the Colonials took fifth place behind host College of Charleston, Georgetown, Navy and Dartmouth. Representing GW was skippers Brendan Shanahan, Kai Friesecke, Andrew Sheerin and Derek Poon-Tip, and crews Andreaa Ranney-Pace, Mercedes McPhee, Matthew Homa and Shira Golub.
GW returns to action this weekend with the Navy Women's Regatta and the St. Mary's Team Race.
