The GW sailing team notched a pair of top-five finishes at the MAISA/SAISA and Admiral Moore Team Race last weekend.
The Colonials took second at the MAISA/SAISA Fleet Race, hosted by Hampton University, and fifth at the Admiral Moore Team race, hosted by SUNY Maritime College.
At Hampton University, a six-person Colonials contingent took the second-place finish in an 11-team field. John Mastrandrea, Sam Mandell, and Zachary Lehan finished fourth in Division A, while Taylor Brimberg, Marshall McCraw, and James Larkin finished fourth in Division B.
"We were able to send a strong combination of skippers and crews to this event," said head coach Billy Martin. "I was happy to see everyone get an opportunity to skipper and crew this weekend, which is very unique. Finishing with a second place finish here really shows the depth of our team."
GW sent its most experienced group of sailors to SUNY Maritime, where a contingent of eight Colonials had a 7-7 record to grab fifth in the 10-team interconference field. The fifth-ranked Colonials finished behind No. 4 Navy, No. 15 Stanford, No. 3 Georgetown, and No. 13 College of Charleston.
"This was a tuneup regatta for our team racing the conference championship, which will be here April 8-9," said Martin. "We finished 5th of 10th, but weren't focusing on the result this weekend. We were familiarizing ourselves with the venue and figuring out what to expect for our conference championship. We now have a great idea of what to improve the next couple of weeks as we prepare."
The Colonials are set to sail this coming weekend in the Team Race Challenge and Women's Dellenbaugh Trophy.
