Lacrosse Edged By Monmouth in Season Opener, 16-15

WASHINGTON â€" The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Monmouth, 16-15, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field.
Junior Jocelyn Donohue scored four goals to pace the Colonials, while seniors Shea Cassidy, Cassidy Shollenberger, and Bailey Forcier each had two a piece. Forcier also tallied a game-high eight draw controls. Senior Michaela Lynch chipped in on the offensive end as well, recording one goal, one assist, and a game-high four ground balls.
In their first collegiate game, freshmen Caroline Kiernan and Katie Quinn matched their veteran teammates with two goals apiece. Kiernan had four shots and one ground ball, while Quinn tallied two shots and one assist.
In the first half, Monmouth took an early 2-0 lead, but the Colonials began to pull away at the 14:54 mark with six in a row to go up 9-3. The Hawks responded with a 3-0 run of their own, with Donohue scoring once more to close out the half with a 10-6 advantage.
GW scored the first two goals of the second half to widen the margin to 12-6, but Monmouth bounced back to score six straight to even the score. The teams traded goals for the remainder of the half, with Donohue taking a pass from Forcier and converting it to even the score at 15 with 23 seconds remaining. The Colonials pressed the Hawks in the circle, but Monmouth scored with 4 seconds left to take the 16-15 victory.
Junior Adele Wise led the Colonials between the pipes, recording nine saves in the crease.
The Colonials return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 15 when they host Georgetown at 3 p.m.
