Volleyball Fights Hard in Loss to VCU

WASHINGTON - The GW volleyball team returned home for the first time in nearly a month but the home-court advantage was not enough to overcome conference-leading VCU in a 3-0 loss on Friday night at the Charles E. Smith Center.

Key Stats
- GW held the advantage in overall kills, 38-34, while holding VCU well below its season-average attack percentage. The Rams hit just .152 in the match.
- GW also held a 47-39 advantage in digs.
- Junior Kelsey Clark led the Colonials with nine kills to go with two blocks (one solo, one assist).
- Sophomore Jaimeson Lee double-doubled for the ninth time this season with 32 assists and 13 digs.

Set 1: VCU 25, GW 22

- GW started the match by taking a 7-5 lead but VCU rallied to pull ahead, 11-8, and force a timeout.
- GW rebounded with a 6-2 run to regain a one-point lead at 14-13 and force VCU to use a timeout.
- A service error out of the timeout opened the door to a 7-2 run for the Rams which put them ahead 20-16.
- The Colonials were able to get within one point down the stretch but the Rams ended the rally to take the first set.
Set 2: VCU 25, GW 21
- VCU scored the first two points of the second set and held an early 7-4 lead.
- The Colonials responded with a 9-2 run, which featured a trio of service aces from Iott, to build a 13-9 lead and force a VCU timeout.
- GW stayed out front until four straight points by the Rams tied the score at 16-16.
- The teams traded points until two straight points put the Colonials on top, 20-19.
- The Rams closed on a 6-1 run to clinch the set.
Set 3: VCU 25, GW 20
- VCU led early in the third, 13-9, but the Colonials used a 6-0 run to take a 15-13 lead.
- The Rams responded with a 7-3 run to move ahead 20-16 and maintained the advantage to clinch the set and the sweep.
