WASHINGTON - The GW volleyball team concluded a month-long stretch of seven matches away from home on Wednesday night but fell in straight sets at American University in a non-conference match at Bender Arena.

Key Stats
- Freshman Marianna Warren led GW with nine kills on the night, the first time the freshman has led the Colonials in kills in a match this season.
- Freshman Sydney Welch led all players with 17 digs.
- Junior Alexis Lete was active at the net with four block assists. She added three errorless kills
- American swung .389 for the match with just seven attack errors while the Colonials committed only 14 attack errors but swung .188.
How It Happened
Set 1: American 25, GW 19
- AU started the match by taking a 3-0 lead but the Colonials battled back to tie the score at 9-9.
- The score remained close before American scored four straight to take a 16-12 lead.
- Senior Kristel Moor's kill ended the run to start a 3-0 spurt for GW which cut the lead to one point at 16-15.
- The teams traded points until American was forced to take a timeout leading by one, 19-18.
- AU emerged from the timeout with three straight points to force a GW timeout but the momentum remained with the home team as they won the first set, 25-19.
Set 2: American 25, GW 15
- AU broke an early 5-5 tie by going on a 7-1 run to take a 12-6 lead.
- GW halted the momentum briefly on a kill by freshman Marianna Warren. The rookie then combined with junior Alexis Lete for a block to make the score 12-8.
- The Eagles answered with two straight points to take a 14-8 lead and force a GW timeout.
- AU extended the lead to nine points at 21-12 and maintained the cushion to take the set, 25-15.
Set 3: American 25, GW 17
- AU opened the third with a 5-1 run to force an early timeout.
- The Colonials started to chip away at the lead but a mid-set spurt put the Eagles in front by 10 points at 17-7.
- GW attempted a late rally, staving off match point five times, but the Eagles ended the match with a 25-17 win.

- GW returns home to the Smith Center for the first time since September 19 to host a pair of A-10 matches against VCU (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Davidson (Saturday, 5 p.m.).
