No. 18 Gymnastics Wins MetroPlex Challenge

FORTH WORTH, Texas - The No. 18 George Washington gymnastics team swept the all-around podium and won or shared five additional titles on three events to win the MetroPlex Challenge on Saturday night at the Forth Worth Convention Center.
GW (8-0) set a new season-high team score for the second week in a row, scoring 196.15 to top the four-team field. The Colonials added a season-high team score of 49.15 on uneven bars in addition to 48.825 on vault, 49.325 on balance beam and 48.85 on floor exercise.
Central Michigan finished second with a score of 194.125, followed by San Jose State (193.65) and Bowling Green (193.55).
The Colonials swept the all-around podium with junior Cami Drouin-Allaire winning the title for the second week in a row with a season-high tying mark of 39.20. She tied for first place on both vault (9.85) and balance beam (9.875) along with scores of 9.80 on uneven bars and 9.675 on floor exercise.
Senior Alex DeMoura took second in the all-around with a 39.05, aided by marks of 9.75 on vault, 9.825 on uneven bars, 9.70 on balance beam and 9.775 on floor.
Junior Jillian Winstanley rounded out GW's sweep of the all-around podium with a score of 38.725. She tied for the balance beam title with a 9.875 and added marks of 9.40 on vault, 9.675 on bars and 9.775 on floor.
Senior Chelsea Raineri and junior Liz Pfeiler earned a share of the uneven bars title by both scoring 9.85. Pfeiler also tied for the title on balance beam with 9.875 while Raineri contributed a 9.80 on vault and 9.70 on floor.
The Colonials entered the meet ranked sixth overall in the nation on balance beam and lived up to their ranking as all five of GW's contributing scores were 9.85 or better. In addition to the first-place trio of Drouin-Allaire, Pfeiler and Winstanley, juniors Sara Mermelstein and Alex Zois each contributed a 9.85 to the total.
Mermelstein rounded out a strong meet by scoring 9.75 on both vault and floor exercise while Zois added a 9.825 on uneven bars and 9.675 on vault.
Freshman Cydney Crasa, who competed exhibition throughout the first three weeks of the season, made her collegiate debut on floor exercise and posted GW's highest score of the event with a 9.825.
GW will return home to the Charles E. Smith Center for the annual Brownie & Girl Scout Meet next Sunday at 1 p.m. against EAGL rival New Hampshire and Ball State.
