WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis team opens the 2017 season on Saturday at Charlotte before visiting Atlantic 10 foe Davidson on Sunday.
After reaching the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals in 2016, the Colonials look for a strong start to the season with a tough weekend of competition ahead. Under then-interim head coach Torrie Browning, GW posted an overall 8-14 record last season. Now head coach, Browning returns five student-athletes and welcomes a trio of newcomers.
Sophomore Maria Siopacha looks to make an impact at the top of GW's lineup after serving as UMBC's top solo player last season. Siopacha tallied a team-best 10-4 singles record in the fall for GW with a 5-5 doubles mark.
Sophomore Sara Grubac and junior Marie-Louise Decamps are poised to round out the top of the Colonials' singles ladder. Grubac received Second Team All-Conference honors after a stellar freshman campaign, matching a team best with 11 dual match singles wins. Decamps battled injury last spring, but returned to true form in the fall to tally an 8-5 singles record.
Charlotte (0-1) fell to Clemson last weekend in its spring season opener, 7-0. The 49ers posted a 10-10 record a year ago.
Davidson (1-0) opened the season with a 7-0 win over Wofford last weekend as rookie Samantha Armas grabbed A-10 Rookie of the Week honors after taking singles and doubles wins. The Wildcats posted a strong 18-5 record last season, tallying a 6-0 mark against conference opponents during the regular season. Davidson knocked out the Colonials in the A-10 Championship semifinals and went on to fall to VCU in the final.
Saturday's match will begin at 5 p.m., while Sunday's contest at Davidson will have a 12 p.m. start.
