
No. 10 Gymnastics Wins Fifth Straight Lindsey Ferris Invitational

WASHINGTON - The No. 10 George Washington gymnastics team captured its fifth consecutive title at the 10th Annual Lindsey Ferris Invitational on Saturday afternoon behind strong team performances on both vault and balance beam. The Colonials captured event titles on both events to help propel them to victory in their home opener.
GW (4-0) totaled 195.225 points behind team scores of 49.025 on vault, 48.00 on uneven bars, 49.375 on balance beam and 48.825 on floor exercise. The team score on balance beam was just 0.125 off of the program-record mark of 49.50.
Pennsylvania finished in second place with 193.275, followed by North Carolina (192.30) and Cornell (190.825).
Senior Alex DeMoura placed second in the all-around with a 39.10, her seventh career performance of 39.00 or better. Junior Cami Drouin-Allaire placed third with a 38.80, followed by junior Jillian Winstanley in fourth with 38.75.
GW started on vault where senior Chelsea Raineri and Drouin-Allaire both scored 9.875 to earn a share of the title. Junior Sara Mermelstein tied for fourth with 9.775 while DeMoura and sophomore Julia McLaughlin tied for sixth place.
Raineri and Winstanley led the Colonials on uneven bars by tying for second place with 9.825. DeMoura tied for sixth place with 9.75.
GW's best event of the day was balance beam where junior Alex Zois and Winstanley tied for the event title with 9.90, tying the mark for the fourth-best routine in program history. For Winstanley, it was the sixth time that she has matched her career-high score of 9.90 while the performance stands as a new personal record for Zois.
Mermelstein and junior Elizabeth Pfeiler put forth identical scores of 9.875 to tie for third place. The score is a career-high mark for Mermelstein. Drouin-Allaire (9.825) and DeMoura (9.80) rounded out GW's excellent showing on beam.
The Colonials concluded the meet on floor exercise where Raineri placed second with 9.825, followed by DeMoura, who tied for third place with 9.80. A trio of Colonials - Winstanley, Mermelstein and junior Madeline Seibold - tied for sixth place with 9.75.
Following the meet, senior co-captains Chelsea Raineri and Alex DeMoura were honored as the 2017 recipients of the Attitude is Everything Award, annually awarded to the gymnast who best exemplify Lindsey's vibrant spirit for life, sincere passion for her sport and selfless dedication to her team.
The Lindsey Ferris Invitational is now in its 10th season and honors the legacy of the gymnastics alumna. Dozens of GW gymnastics alums packed the Smith Center stands on Saturday to cheer on the Colonials to victory.
