Swim & Dive Set to Wrap Home Season this Weekend

DOUBLE THE FUN: The Colonials will close their home season with back-to-back meets, beginning when Bowling Green and local foe Georgetown visit the Charles E. Smith Center Pool on Friday at 2 p.m. The women's team will compete in a tri-meet while the men's side will compete in a dual meet with Georgetown. Diving will take place at Georgetown's Albert G. McCarthy, Jr. Pool.
GW will then take on Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Saturday for Senior Day, with diving at 10 a.m. and swimming at 12 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will begin at 11:50 a.m.
BACK IN ACTION: GW's men's squad returns to competition after nearly a two-month hiatus, last competing at the Magnus Cup Invitational from Nov. 18-20. The women's team most recently hosted defending Atlantic 10 champion Richmond on Dec. 3. Both squads return to the Smith Center after a week-long training trip to San Diego.
LAST TIME OUT: The women narrowly fell to six-time defending conference champion Richmond, 150-148, after strong performances across the board. Junior Abigail Fusco highlighted the day with three individual victories and a relay win.
On the men's side, the Colonials placed third out of nine squads at the Magnus Cup. Rookie Shawn Lemarie won the 1,650-yard freestyle and sophomore Jake Ortiz took first on the 1-meter boards to highlight the weekend of competition.
THE AWARD GOES TO: Several Colonials grabbed weekly honors in the fall semester. Sophomore Lucy Castro and freshman Alex Cronin were each tabbed CollegeSwimming.com's Atlantic 10 Conference Swimmers-of-the-Week for their performances in the home opener against Rider on Oct. 8, and Jackie Torrez has twice earned A-10 Rookie of the Week honors (Oct. 11, Nov. 22) in a stellar start to her maiden campaign.
On the boards, sophomore Miranda Simon tallied an NCAA Zone qualifying score in the 3-meter event on Oct. 29 against Howard to qualify for the postseason.
SCOUTING THE FOES: Bowling Green's women will compete on Friday for the first time since the three-day Miami Redhawks Invitational from Dec. 2-4, where the Falcons finished in fourth in a field of 10 teams. Bowling Green finished third a the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championships last season and graduated their top performer - NCAA qualifier Daniela Carrillo.
Georgetown's women defeated Pepperdine in dual-meet action on Monday, winning all 16 events. The men return from a six-week long hiatus, most recently taking fifth out of eight teams at the Bucknell Invitational from Dec. 2-4.
Jared Cooper-Vespa grabbed Big East Male Swimmer of the Week for the Hoyas in November after posting an NCAA-qualifying mark on the 1-meter boards. Women's swimmer Morgan Conley was named Big East Rookie of the Week after recording a sub-24 second time in the 50 free that same week.
Both of George Mason's squads competed in the Orange Bowl Classic on Jan. 3, the men taking third and the women tying for third.
Two Patriots competed at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter National Championships - Sydney Fisher on the women's side and Alex Morin on the men's side. Fisher has twice been named A-10 Performer of the Week, excelling in the sprint freestyle events, while the men's team's Attila Kiss has garnered a three Rookie of the Week nods for his performances in the distance free events.
THE ROAD AHEAD: After this weekend the Colonials will wrap the regular season at Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 21. The meet will mark the final competition before GW travels to Geneva, Ohio, for the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championships.
