Coming off a record setting 2015-16 season, the GW sailing team opens a new campaign this weekend as it heads to competition in four regattas from South Carolina to New York.
GW will be looking to build on the success of a season ago which included top-10 finishes in three of the six ICSA National Championships, leading to a 10th place finish in the Fowle Trophy standings.
The Colonials return three sailors that earned MAISA All-Conference honors a year ago in senior Brendan Shanahan (second team coed skipper) and juniors Miranda Bakos (first team women's skipper) and Belle Strachan (All-MAISA crew). Additionally, sophomores Sarah Alexander and Riley Legault are back following fourth- and sixth-place showings, respectively, at women's singlehanded nationals last season.
This weekend, GW sailors will head to the Laser South and Radial Open at the Naval Academy, the Riley Cup at Old Dominion University and the Jack Boeringer '52 Memorial at Cornell University.
Sailing at the Laser South will be seniors Brendan Shanahan and Colin Kennedy and sophomores Adam DiDomizio and Wade Wagner. Meanwhile, junior Kia Olsson along with Alexander and Legault will race in the Radial Open.
"The two laser events will be a lot of fun and a great warm-up for the nationals qualifiers in a few weeks," said interim coach Catherine Shanahan. "We have a lot of experienced laser sailors traveling to these events with Brendan, Sarah and Riley all having sailed in the Singlehanded Nationals last year."
At the Riley Cup and Boeringer Memorial, GW will send a mix of returnees and freshmen to face a field made up of other MAISA teams. GW's lineup at the two events is as follows:
Riley Cup
Skippers: Junior Sam White and freshman John Mastrandrea
Crews: Freshmen Katie Lounsbury and Marshall McCraw; sophomore Alexandra Fayer
Jack Boeringer '52 Memorial
Skippers: Senior Daniel DelBello; sophomore Derek Poon-Tip; freshman Rhodes Garner
Crews: Freshmen Briggs D'Eliscu and Andreea Ranney-Pace
Scores can be followed from all four events here.
