BALTIMORE - Three players posted double-digit kills, led by freshman Skylar Iott's 12 winners, as the George Washington volleyball team beat Loyola (Md.) in four sets on Tuesday evening at Reitz Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-12, 20-25, 25-22.
Iott, the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week, posted double-digit kills for her seventh consecutive match to start her collegiate career. GW (4-3) also got strong offensive outings from seniors Chidima Osuchukwu and Loren Williams, who tallied 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Junior Kristel Moor added nine kills (.304) along with three blocks (two solo, one assist), five digs and a service ace.
Osuchukwu was also a defensive force at the net, totaling nine total blocks with five solo rejections and four assists. The five solo blocks, which ties a career-high, fell one shy of GW's single-match, four-set record of six that is held by Anna Krimmel from the 1994 season.
Loyola (2-2) jumped out to an 11-7 lead to open the match before an 8-1 run put the Colonials on top at 15-12. The teams remained close and GW held a one-point lead at 21-20. An attack error and kill by Osuchukwu extended the lead to 23-20, but the Greyhounds used a kill to get back within two points of the lead. Another kill by Osuchukwu moved the Colonials to set point and a kill by Iott clinched the 25-21 win.
GW stormed out to an 8-1 lead in the second set and never trailed the rest of the way en route to a 25-12 win. The Colonials swung a torrid .542 in the set on the strength of 13 errorless kills while forcing nine attack errors by Loyola.
The Greyhounds put forth their best offensive effort of the match in the fourth set, swinging .419 (17k-4e-31a) on the way to a 25-20 win. GW held an early 12-10 lead but the Greyhounds used a 10-2 run to build a 20-14 advantage before clinching the 25-20 win.
The Colonials clinched the match in the fourth with a 25-22 win. GW had worked to secure a 17-11 lead, but a furious rally by Loyola pulled them within three points of the lead at 23-20. A kill by Osuchukwu moved GW to match point, but Loyola scored two quick points to make the score 24-22. A kill by Williams erased the threat and ended the match.
Senior Emily Clemens ran the balanced attack from the setter position, accumulating 27 assists along with nine digs, two blocks (one solo, one assist) and one kill.
GW held advantages in kills (49-46), attack percentage (.233-.135), and total blocks (16.0-5.0) in winning its fifth straight decision over Loyola to pull ahead in the all-time series, 14-1.
The Colonials return to action in this weekend in Pullman, Washington, for the Cougar Classic at Washington State University. GW will play matches against Idaho (Fri., 12:30 p.m ET), Washington State (10:30 p.m ET) and UMES (Sat., 1:00 p.m. ET).
