WASHINGTON - Senior Chidima Osuchukwu totaled 27 kills and was named to the All-Tournament Team on the final day of the George Washington Invitational on Saturday at the Charles E. Smith Center.
GW (6-7) fell in four sets to Northern Illinois in the first match of the day before dropping a 3-0 decision to Tennessee in the nightcap.
For the weekend, Osuchukwu swung .453 with 40 kills and 10 blocks (three solo, seven assists). It marks the third time she has made to an All-Tournament team during GW's non-conference, tournament schedule.
Northern Illinois bested the Colonials, 3-1, in the first match of the day. Set scores were 19-25, 17-25, 25-15, 19-25.
GW put forth its highest attack percentage of the season by swinging .297 throughout the four-set affair, but it was not enough against Northern Illinois' .333 average.
Osuchukwu led the Colonials with 13 kills against just one error (.571) in addition to three block assists while freshman Skylar Iott and sophomore Kelsey Clark each added 10 kills apiece.
GW swung a combined .258 in the first two sets (24k-9e-58a) but was unable to overcome a torrid attack by Northern Illinois. The Huskies combined to swing .400 (33k-9e-60a) across the first two frames to take a 2-0 lead with wins of 25-19 and 25-17.
GW's offense came alive in a dominant third set that saw the Colonials commit just three attack errors en route to a 25-15 win. NIU led early by a score of 5-4 before the Colonials scored seven straight points to begin a 13-2 run to build a 17-7 lead. The Huskies attempted a late comeback down the stretch but the margin was too large to overcome as GW cruised to a 25-15 win.
The Colonials swung .483 (17k-3e-29a) in the third set while converting on 75-percent (12-for-16) of sideout opportunities.
NIU retaliated in the fourth set, opening on a 5-2 run and never trailed en route to a match-clinching 25-19 win.
GW fell to Tennessee in the nightcap, 3-0. Set scores were 22-25, 17-25, 25-27.
Osuchukwu again led the Colonials on the attack with 14 kills (.480) with just two miscues. She added four blocks (three solo, one assist) at the net.
The first set showcased offensive fire power from both teams as the squads combined to hit .375. Tennessee took the 1-0 lead with a 25-22 win, converting on 63-percent (14-of-22) of sideout opportunities and holding a 10-5 advantage in digs.
The Volunteers overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a 6-2 run and never trailed again in a 25-17 win in the second set.
The third set was the closest of the match with 11 ties and three lead changes. GW trailed 19-17 late in the set when it used a 6-3 run to take a 23-22 lead. The Volunteers tied the score on a kill but a service error moved the Colonials to set point with a 24-23 lead. Tennessee tied the match once again at 24-24 but a kill by junior Aaliya Davidson put the Colonials on top again at 25-24. The Volunteers then scored three straight points to clinch the match.
Iott and Davidson each added seven kills against Tennessee.
GW will open the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule next weekend when it visits both Dayton (Fri., 7 p.m.) and Saint Louis (Sun., 2 p.m.).
