WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's soccer squad fell to No. 18 Georgetown on Thursday afternoon, 1-0, at the GW Soccer Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (6-2-0) faced their second nationally-ranked opponent of the season in No. 18 Georgetown (7-1-0) and their second consecutive qualifier from last year's NCAA Championship.
The Hoyas broke through early, scoring in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead.
Georgetown controlled the ball for much of the first half, but redshirt junior keeper Miranda Horn made three saves - including a stellar diving deflection - to keep the Colonials within one at the half.
The Colonials put the pressure on in the second stanza, halving Georgetown's shots from eight in the first half to four in the second.
Junior Brittany Cooper laced a shot toward the net in the 65th minute, but the Hoyas made the save to preserve their lead.
GW's best chance came in the 83rd minute, when freshman Olivia Di Cristofaro sent a cross into the box. Cooper tipped the ball to senior MacKenzie Cowley, who one-touched it into the back of the net but was called offsides to nullify the goal.
Horn added two more saves in the second half to finish the match, including an aggressive sliding stop.
The Colonials take a short trip to Towson on Sunday to wrap non-conference play with a 2 p.m. match.
