WASHINGTON - The George Washington women's tennis squad opens fall play over the weekend at the Bedford Mid-Atlantic Cup in College Park, Maryland, beginning on Friday.
Atlantic 10 foe VCU will also compete at the Bedford Mid-Atlantic Cup, along with Coppin State, Georgetown, James Madison, Maryland and Navy.
Six Colonials will complete at the fall-opening tournament: freshman Melis Bayraktaroglu, sophomores Victoria Kogan and Maria Siopacha, juniors Marie-Louise Decamps and Kamilla Beisenova and senior Taylor Nederlander.
GW's three newcomers - Bayraktaroglu, Beisenova and Siopacha - will all compete in their first tournament in the Buff and Blue. Siopacha joins the Colonials after transferring from UMBC, where she served as the Retrievers top solo player as a rookie. Beisenova also transferred to GW, competing at Elon before becoming a Colonial as a junior.
Each Colonial will compete in the singles draw at the Bedford Mid-Atlantic Cup. Doubles pairs will be: Siopacha and Nederlander, Beisenova and Bayraktaroglu, and Decamps and Kogan.
Bayraktaroglu will serve as the tournament's third-seeded singles player, while Siopacha will play as the No. 8 seed.
The tournament will follow a compass draw format, featuring a singles draw of 32 players and a doubles draw of 16.
Competition will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday morning. The first day of play will include two rounds of main draw singles and one round of doubles action. Singles and doubles finals will be played on Monday.
