GW Sailing Opens Fall Season with Successful Weekend

WASHINGTON â€" The George Washington sailing team competed in four races over the weekend and captured a first-place finish at the Jack Boeringer '52 Memorial Regatta while taking third in singlehanded competition at the Laser South.
Racing against a field of regional competitors, GW entered two boats at the Jack Boeringer '52 Memorial Regatta and claimed first and third. The Colonials took the title with skipper Derek Poon-Tip and crew Briggs D'Eliscu in Division A, and skippers Rhodes Garner and Daniel DelBello and crew Andreea Ranney-Pace in Division B.
GW closed out team competition this weekend at the Riley Cup. The Colonials, represented by skippers Sam White and John Mastrandea, and crew Katie Lounsbury, Marshall McCraw, and Alexandra Fayer, finished ninth in the 20-team field.
In singlehanded competition, the senior duo of Brendan Shanahan and Colin Kennedy claimed two of the top six spots in the Laser South to advance to the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Singlehanded Championship. Shanahan finished third among 20 sailors with first place finishes in races two, seven, and 14; while Kennedy finished sixth and placed fourth in races one and nine.
GW's fourth regatta was the Radial Open. The GW trio of Riley Legault, Sarah Alexander, and Kia Olsson placed fifth, seventh, and 11th among 20 sailors, with each finishing near the top of the pack in a number of races. Legault led the field in race seven, while Alexander claimed second in races three and seven, and Olsson finished seventh in races one, four, and seven.
