PULLMAN, Wash. - The George Washington volleyball team got double-digit kill efforts from senior Chidima Osuchukwu and junior Aaliya Davidson as part of a 3-0 sweep of UMES on Saturday afternoon in the final match of the Cougar Classic at Bohler Gym. Set scores were 25-13, 25-20, 25-20.
GW (6-4) has now won four of its past five matches entering its home-opening George Washington Invitational next weekend at the Charles E. Smith Center.
Osuchukwu swung .455 for the match and put down a match-high 13 kills along with three blocks (one solo, two assists) to lead the Colonials.
Davidson registered a season-high 10 kills and added six digs and a service ace while sophomore Kelsey Clark contributed nine kills (.316) and four digs.
GW got off to a hot start, hitting .480 in the first set with just two attack errors, in a 25-15 first-set win. GW opened with four consecutive points and led 8-6 before and 11-2 run created a 19-8 advantage en route to the win.
The Colonials had to stave off a late rally to hold off UMES (6-4) in the second set before prevailing 25-20. Three straight kills from Osuchukwu and a kill from Davidson put GW ahead 22-13, but the Hawks scored seven of the next nine points to rally. A service error promptly ended the threat and handed GW the win.
In the third set, the Colonials broke an 18-18 tie with four straight points and cruised down the stretch to a 25-20 win to clinch the match.
GW held statistical advantages in attack percentage (.284-.072), kills (40-25), aces (4-3) and digs (32-26) in earning its third sweep of the season and sixth win overall.
Senior Emily Clemens assisted on 35 of 40 kills to pace the offense. She added three digs and a service ace.
Senior Maddie Brown led the defense with a match-high 11 digs.
GW hosts the annual George Washington Invitational at the Charles E. Smith Center next weekend. The Colonials face off against James Madison in the home opener at 6:30 p.m. on Friday before taking on Northern Illinois (1 p.m.) and Tennessee (7:30 p.m.) on Saturday.
