WASHINGTON -- GW sailing has set its fall schedule for the 2016 season and the fifth-year varsity program will seek to continue to improve its national standing after a historic 2015-16 campaign.
The fall slate will feature a mix of challenging intersectional regattas pitting the Colonials against top teams from the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) and NEISA (New England), as well as Coed, Women’s and Laser qualifying events and the MAISA and Atlantic Coast Championships.
GW will hope to build on a very successful 2015-16 campaign in which it earned a number six ranking in the women’s poll, and 13th in coed, while capturing the first titles in program history with the MAISA Women’s Fall Dinghy and MAISA Women’s Championship. The Colonials would go on to earn berths in both the women’s nationals, finishing 10th, and coed nationals, finishing 17th.
The Colonials are set for a possible 10 consecutive weeks of competition beginning with its fall debut at the Laser South Qualifier and the Radial Open at Navy, the Riley Cup at Old Dominion and the Boehringer Memorial Regatta at Cornell on Sept. 10-11.
The interconference schedule is highlighted by strong coed events at Kings Point’s Nevins Trophy (Sept. 17-18), St. Mary’s Interconference (Sept. 24-25), and the Navy Fall Women’s Interconference (Oct. 8-9). GW will host its alumni regatta on Sept. 24-25 in Washington.
The Colonials’ top men’s Laser, or Singlehanded, sailors will have two chances to qualify for the MAISA Men’s Championship which will be held in Annapolis, Maryland on Oct. 8-9, via top-six showings at either the season-opening Laser South Qualifier or the MAISA Laser Qualifier also at Navy on Sept. 24-25. GW is also set to compete at the MAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championships in Annapolis on Sept. 24-25. A top-four finish by either the men or women at the MAISA Laser Championships earn a spot in the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals on Nov. 4-6.
The women’s dinghy slate is headlined by the MAISA Women’s Fall Championship on Oct. 22-23 in Norfolk with a top-eight finish qualifying for the Atlantic Coast Women’s Championship on Nov. 12-13, as the Colonials look to defend their title.
GW’s coed schedule features the South Fall Qualifier in Washington, D.C. on Sept. 24-25, with the top-four finishers advancing to the War Memorial MAISA Coed Fall Championship hosted by St. Mary’s on Oct. 29-30.
The top-seven teams from the War Memorial will move on to the Atlantic Coast Championship on Nov. 12-13.
