On the strength of top-10 finishes in three of the six Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National championships, the GW Sailing program finished in 10th place in the 2016 Fowle Trophy standings.
The Fowle Trophy is awarded annually to the team with the best overall performance in the six ICSA Nationals (Match Race, Women's Singlehanded, Men's Singlehanded, Team Race, Women's Dinghy and Coed Dinghy) based on a point system.
GW finished fourth in Women's Singlehanded (Sarah Alexander), ninth in Men's Singlehanded (Brendan Shanahan) and 10th in women's, while also taking 17th in coeds.
"It's pretty exciting to be in the top 10 alongside college sailing's elite programs after just four years of varsity sailing," said head coach John Pearce. "Our strength in singlehanded sailing and our overall team depth were the big difference makers for us this year, and we hope to carry that forward in future years as well!"
Yale won the Fowle Trophy with 95.62 points and was followed by Georgetown (95.35), Stanford (93.66), Boston College (92.89), the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (92.58), Brown (92.53), College of Charleston (92.14), St. Mary's College of Maryland (89.31), Boston University (89.13) and GW (88.55).
