SAN DIEGO -- For the second straight year, the George Washington sailing team is set to compete in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) / Sperry Women's Nationals from May 24-27 in San Diego.
The Colonials, who finished 13th at Nationals last year, are in the midst of their best season in program history. GW captured Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA) women's titles in both the fall and spring, in the process earning a bid to nationals, and carries a No. 6 national ranking by Sailing World.
The four-day event starts with the semifinal round on May 24-25 with two regattas of 18 teams, and the top nine from each semifinal moving on to the 18-team final on May 26-27.
"Our competition team is going to be very similar to our MAISA conference championship teams from the fall and spring, which gives us the depth and versatility we will need against the country's best," said head coach John Pearce. "We have an outstanding group of sailors for both light and heavy winds, so I hope we get a mixture of conditions at the regatta so we can take advantage of that."
Competing for GW will be skippers Miranda Bakos, Hannah McNomee, Maria Sinagra, and India Johnstone; and crews Belle Strachan, Madison Oleson, Mercedes McPhee, Shira Golub, Emma Mendenhall and Kia Olsson.
Scores for the event can be found here while a full list of the field can be seen here. Following women's nationals, GW is set to compete in coed nationals for the first time. That event will be held May 31-June 3.
