WASHINGTON - Junior Paige Kovalsky posted a perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate and earned the win in the circle on Wednesday afternoon as the George Washington softball squad downed Coppin State, 8-0, at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (17-15, 5-1 A-10) scored early and often, tallying runs in all but one frame, to dispatch the visiting Eagles (2-23) in six innings.
The Buff and Blue capitalized on an error in the first inning, as sophomore Rochelle Draper reached after Coppin State's shortstop fumbled a ground ball with one out. Draper advanced to second on a wild pitch with two outs and scored as Kovalsky notched her first hit of the game - a single to center. Junior Monica Macchiarulo then singled to put runners on the corners and swiped second, drawing a throw allowing Kovalsky to cross home and give GW a 2-0 lead after one inning.
The Colonials added two more in the third, the first coming from back-to-back doubles by senior Carlee Gray and Kovalsky. Freshman Riley Tejcek later singled up the middle to plate another for GW.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Buff and Blue added another pair of runs as rookie Ashley Schnarrs worked a walk with one out, advanced to second on a ground ball then stole third. A single by Gray scored Schnarrs, and Kovalsky's third hit of the day put runners on first and second with two outs. Macchiarulo was plunked to load the bases for senior Morgan Matetic, who singled to center to grab an RBI and put GW up, 6-0, after four innings of play.
Sophomore Morgan Rinehart led off GW's half of the fifth with her third triple of the season and scored easily on Schnarrs' single to left to put GW ahead, 7-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kovalsky smacked her second double of the game and got within 60 feet of ending the contest after Macchiarulo again was hit by a pitch and Matetic's line drive to center was deep enough for Kovalsky to tag. A sacrifice fly by sophomore catcher Aiyana Leal-Robles enacted the run rule, giving GW an 8-0 victory.
Kovalsky (4-for-4, 2 RBI, 3 Runs) posted her third career four-hit effort, again tying a program record for hits in a single game. In the circle, Kovalsky tossed five innings of one-hit ball to grab her fifth win of the season. Sophomore Ashley Pilcher threw one inning in relief to close out the contest.
Gray (2-for-4, RBI, 2 Runs) also had a strong day at the plate, while eight different Colonials contributed to a total of 12 hits on the day.
The Colonials return to action on Saturday, when Atlantic 10 foe Fordham visits the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus for a doubleheader to start a three-game set.
