WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball team fell in the opening game of a three-game Atlantic 10 series with Fordham, 3-1, on Saturday afternoon at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
After inclement weather delayed the start of the game by an hour, defending conference champion Fordham (25-15, 8-1 A-10) worked a walk to start the game. A stolen base and a single put runners on the corners, but the runner on first left early on the next pitch for the first out of the frame. A sacrifice fly plated a run for the Rams before a first-and-third play led to an out at the plate to end the inning.
Sophomore starter Sarah Costlow settled down after the first, blanking Fordham for the next three innings.
GW (17-16, 5-2 A-10) tied up the game in the fourth after junior Monica Macchiarulo worked a one-out walk then scored on a booming double to left center by senior Morgan Matetic to knot the game at 1-1.
Fordham answered in the top of the fifth with two runs to take the lead after a single, a walk and a bases-clearing double, concluding the scoring.
Sophomore Alana Anderson posted a strong effort at the plate for GW, tying a career-high with three hits, posting two singles and a double in her three plate appearances on the day.
The Colonials conclude the series on Sunday, as Fordham returns to the GW Softball field for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
