WASHINGTON - The George Washington softball squad hosts Coppin State on Wednesday for a single game at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
The Colonials (16-15, 5-1 A-10) look to improve upon their 12-5 home record, while Coppin State (2-22) takes an 0-15 road mark into Wednesday's matchup.
GW is coming off a successful Atlantic 10 road trip to St. Bonaventure over the weekend, where the Colonials won the three-game series with pair of victories to land in a tie with Fordham atop the league standings.
Junior Monica Macchiarulo leads the squad and ranks second in the conference with a .404 average on the season and has swiped a team-best 15 bases. As a team, the Colonials have tallied 55 stolen bases on the season. Classmate Megan Linn is close behind with a .398 mark and a squad-high 27 runs scored.
Junior Paige Kovalsky sits atop the A-10 with 14 doubles this spring and ranks sixth in the nation with 0.45 two-baggers per contest.
In the circle, sophomore Sarah Costlow (10-6, 2.39 ERA) has been GW's go-to, tossing 108.1 innings with nine complete games.
Coppin State's Danielle Smith enters Wednesday with a team-best .417 average and 14 runs scored while starting all 24 contests for the Eagles. Smith also poses a threat on the bases, tallying nine of the team's 17 steals this spring without being caught. Alanna Williams (.309) has knocked in a squad-high 13 RBIs.
The Eagles' pitching staff owns a combined ERA of 10.31 with three arms splitting the innings this spring. Opposing batters have hit .425 against Coppin State, and Megan Navaez has earned both of the team's wins.
A year ago, Costlow tossed a complete-game shutout against Coppin State, allowing just five hits. Kovalsky led the offense with a 3-for-3 day with a pair of runs scored in the 5-0 win. GW leads the all-time series with Coppin State, 5-2.
Wednesday's first pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the GW Softball Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
