GW Sailing Takes Fifth at Dellenbaugh Women's Regatta

Facing a national field of competitors at the Dellenbaugh Women's Regatta hosted by Brown University last weekend, the No. 12 George Washington sailing team recorded a strong, fifth-place finish.
The Colonials, with skipper India Johnstone and crew Emma Mendenhall, won B Division while finishing eighth in A Division with skipper Maria Sinagra teaming with crew Mercedes McPhee (races 1-4) and Kia Olsson (race 5).
Weather limited the event to just five races in each division, with heavy rain and a lack of winds on Saturday allowing just four A Division races and three B Division races to be completed. On Sunday, gusty winds and snow forced racing to be called after just two B Division and one A Division race.
Still, GW was able to adjust with the conditions as Johnstone and Mendenhall recorded victories in the final race on Saturday and the first race on Sunday, before a third-place finish in the final race. Sinagra and McPhee picked up a victory in race 3, while Sinagra and Olsson finished fourth in race 5.
"We took advantage of the windy conditions being a stronger team than many of the others to move up the standings, which was good to see," said head coach John Pearce.
The 18-team field included 13 of the top 15 teams in Sailing World's College Rankings, including No. 1 Rhode Island, which took the trophy. No. 7 Stanford finished second, No. 2 Yale third and No. 15 Brown fourth.
GW, which is ranked 14th in the coed poll in addition to 12th in the women's division, returns to action this weekend with the MAISA Team Race Champs and the Emily Wick Women's Regatta.
