The George Washington sailing team is set to race in the MAISA Coed Championship for the America's Trophy this weekend at SUNY Maritime, looking to add another milestone achievement to a championship season.
The Colonials have already won women's conference championships in both the spring and fall, and are ranked seventh nationally in the division.
Now, GW will be looking to qualify for ICSA Coed Nationals for the first time in program history, needing a top-nine finish to do so. Racing gets underway Saturday morning and concludes on Sunday.
The Colonials, who are ranked 15th nationally in the coed division, will be represented by Brendan Shanahan and Miranda Bakos in A Division, and Kai Friesecke and Riley Legault in B Division. Andrew Sheerin, Shira Golub and Belle Strachan will serve as alternates.
"This is a huge opportunity for us," said head coach John Pearce. "The America Trophy is at SUNY Maritime Academy this year, which is a challenging place to race due to strong current on the East River. Our goal will be to score consistent race results in those conditions throughout the weekend."
With a top-nine performance, GW will advance to the 36-team coed national championship in San Diego which will be held from May 31-June 3.
