This Weekend: The George Washington sailing team competes in three competitive regattas this weekend: The MAISA Women's Championship at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, the Admiral's Cup at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and the Arrigan Regatta at Georgetown.
MAISA Women's Championship: The main event of the weekend, the MAISA Women's Championship serves as a qualifier for the ICSA Women's National Semifinal, which will be held May 24-27 in San Diego. The top nine finishers secure a spot in the 28-team field at nationals. The No. 14 Colonials hope to defend their MAISA Women's Fall Championship, the team's first conference title in program history. Set to sail for GW will be skippers Hannah McNomee, Maria Sinagra, India Johnstone, and Miranda Bakos, and crews Madison Oleson, Kia Olsson, Mercedes McPhee, Emma Mendenhall, and Belle Strachan.
Pearce's Points: "We're defending our MAISA Women's Fall Championship win," said head coach John Pearce. "We're hungry to beat our MAISA rivals again this weekend.
Admiral's Cup: Leading the Colonials, ranked 17th in Coed, in the A Division boat is skipper Brendan Shanahan and crew Matt Homa, while skipper Kai Friesecke and crew Riley Legault will be competing in the B Division. Daniel DelBello will take the field in the singlehanded C Division boat, a strong point for the GW team.
Pearce's Points: "This is the last major interconference regatta before our MAISA Coed Championships next weekend, so it's the beginning of our efforts to peak at the right time in the season."
Arrigan Regatta: Two teams will be taking the water for GW: skipper Jay Spector and crew Gabriella Malek, and skipper Colin Kennedy and crew Kelly Weigold are set to sail on Colonials 1, while skipper Marie Line and crew Sam Mandell, and skipper Sarah Alexander and crew Alexandra Fayer will compete on Colonials 2.
