ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The George Washington softball squad defeated St. Bonaventure, 13-5, in the series finale on Saturday afternoon to wrap the second weekend of Atlantic 10 Conference play at Joyce Field.
GW (16-15, 5-1 A-10) smacked a season-high 16 hits in the rubber match, while limiting St. Bonaventure (5-19, 2-4 A-10) to five runs.
The Colonials jumped out to an early lead as a two-out error preceded all five of GW's runs in the third. After sophomore Alana Anderson reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher, senior Carlee Gray and juniors Paige Kovalsky and Monica Macchiarulo each singled to plate two for GW. Senior Morgan Matetic then walked to load the bases and sophomore Aiyana Leal-Robles worked an RBI walk. Sophomore Morgan Rinehart's two-run single up the middle drove in two more as GW took a 5-0 lead after the first half of the frame.
St. Bonaventure responded in its half of the stanza, grabbing a quick run with back-to-back doubles. Two more hits plated another as the Bonnies closed the gap to 5-2 after one.
The Colonials doubled their score in the fourth after Rinehart started off the frame with a single. A bunt single by Linn and a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Rochelle Draper put a pair of runners in scoring position for sophomore Alana Anderson, who singled to center to drive in two. With two outs, back-to-back doubles by Kovalsky and Macchiarulo added two more runs, and consecutive walks to Matetic and Leal-Robles loaded the bases. A wild pitch accounted for GW's fifth and final run of the inning to put the Buff a Blue up, 10-2.
The Bonnies responded with three runs of their own with the help of four hits and a walk to cut the lead to 10-5.
GW added one run in the fifth on a walk and two hits and another in the sixth with the help of an RBI triple by Anderson, putting the Colonials ahead, 12-5.
The Colonials posted one final run in the seventh as Matetic doubled in Macchiarulo, who had walked and stolen second. GW held St. Bonaventure scoreless in the final frame to take the series finale, 13-5.
Sophomore Sarah Costlow (10-6) earned the victory, tossing six innings of relief after entering the game in the second inning.
Kovalsky (4-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 Runs) matched a program high with her second four-hit game of the season, and Anderson (3-for-5, 3 RBIs, 2 Runs), Rinehart (3-for-4, 3 RBIs, 1 Run) and Macchiarulo (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 3 Runs) matched career highs with three hits on the day. Linn (2-for-6, 2 Runs) tallied her team-best 13th multi-hit game of the spring.
