RICHMOND, Va. -- The George Washington lacrosse team's offense broke out in a big way on Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field, as the Colonials downed Atlantic 10 rival VCU, 20-12, for their second straight victory.
The Colonials' 20 goals against VCU are their most since scoring 21 against Liberty on Feb. 26, 2014. It is the ninth 20-goal game in GW lacrosse history.
Junior Bailey Forcier tallied a game-high eight points on three goals and five assists, the most points and assists by a Colonial since Jamie Bumgardner had seven assists and 10 points against Mount St. Mary's on March 17, 2015. The five assists also matched the third-most ever by a Colonial in a game, while the eight points tied the seventh-highest single-game total in program history.
Forcier added a career-best six draw controls and senior Julia Lawson had a career-high five, as GW held a 24-10 advantage over the Rams. The 24 draw controls were a season high for the Colonials and one shy of the program's single-game record of 25 set against Howard on Feb. 12, 2014.
Junior Michaela Lynch scored a career-high six points, matching her personal best with four goals while dishing out two assists, and she won a pair of draw controls in the game. Sophomore Jocelyn Donohue also tallied a career-high four goals, scoring on all four of her shots on the day, and senior Olivia Boudreau recorded a career-best five points on two goals and three assists, as she moved into eight place all-time at GW with 48 assists in her career. Boudreau also matched her career high with three caused turnovers.
Junior Shea Cassidy also notched a career high with four points on two goals and two assists while equaling a career best with four draw controls, and senior Gabbi Hull registered two goals, an assist, two ground balls and two draw controls.
In all, nine different Colonials found the back of the net, with six scoring multiple goals. GW also dished out a season-high 14 assists, the second-most in a single game in program history behind the 16 recorded against Howard in 2004. In addition, the Colonials' 34 total points also matched the program's second-highest single-game total.
Freshman Rachel Yaffe had a big game on the defensive end with three ground balls and four caused turnovers, and senior Jacqui Stevens also forced three VCU miscues.
The game remained close in the first half, as neither team led by more than two goals. GW opened the contest with a 3-1 run over the first 6:38 behind back-to-back markers by Lynch, and the teams traded goals for the next 10 minutes until consecutive VCU goals tied it at 5-5 with 6:10 remaining. The Colonials scored two in a row to make it 7-5 with 1:45 left, but two straight by the Rams over the final 67 seconds made it 7-7 at the break.
VCU extended its run to 5-1 with three of the first four goals of the second half to take a 10-8 lead four minutes into the period. The Colonials, however, exploded for 11 in a row over the next 14 minutes to take control with a commanding 19-10 advantage. Donohue scored three times during the surge, while Forcier and Lynch each scored twice. The Rams got two back with consecutive tallies 39 seconds apart to make it 19-12 with 7:20 left, but they would not score again, and freshman Ellie Allen closed out the scoring with the first goal of her career with 4:01 left to seal the 20-12 win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adele Wise recorded eight saves for the Colonials, while VCU goalie Ria Peralta stopped 15 shots. GW outshot VCU, 42-20, including 23-9 in the second half, and the 42 shots were a season high.
Sofia Edmond led the Rams with four points on three goals and an assist, and Sky Hyatt also notched a hat trick.
The Colonials return to action on Friday when they host A-10 rival La Salle at 4 p.m. at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
