WASHINGTON -- The George Washington lacrosse team dropped its Atlantic 10 opener, 10-4, to Revolutionary Rival George Mason on Friday afternoon at the GW Lacrosse Field on the Mount Vernon Campus.
Junior Bailey Forcier led the Colonials with two goals and added a pair of draw controls, while seniors Olivia Boudreau and Gabbi Hull each scored a goal.
Forcier put the Colonials (2-7, 0-1 A-10) on the board first, converting a feed from junior Michaela Lynch 5:30 minutes into the game, but Mason (6-2, 1-0 A-10) responded just over two minutes later with a goal by Alexa McGovern, which ignited a 6-0 run over the remainder of the half for a 6-1 lead at the break.
The Patriots scored the first three goals of the second stanza over a five-minute span for a 9-1 advantage before Boudreau snapped GW's drought with a free-position goal at the 24:05 mark, and Hull added another free-position marker at 17:34 to make it 9-3. McGovern scored her game-high fourth goal two minutes later, and neither team found the back of the net again until Forcier concluded the scoring with 1:43 remaining with an assist from sophomore Brooke Sands.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adele Wise stopped seven shots in 42 minutes between the pipes before giving way to junior Erin Long, who recorded a pair of saves in the final 18 minutes. Elizabeth Benedetto made 12 saves for George Mason.
The Colonials held a 24-21 edge in ground balls behind four each by Sands and seniors Ellie Glasgow and Jacqui Stevens and three from junior Shea Cassidy, who also had a pair of caused turnovers and draw controls. Sands caused two turnovers for GW.
The Colonials return to action on Sunday when they visit A-10 rival St. Bonaventure. Opening draw is slated for 12 p.m.
