WASHINGTON -- The George Washington Sailing team hosted the second annual GW Team Race Regatta over the weekend, finishing in fourth place with a 5-5 record.
GW faced a competitive field of top MAISA teams Cornell, Fordham, Hobart & William Smith, Navy, and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Three boats took the field to compete for the Colonials: skipper Brendan Shanahan and crew Matt Homa, skipper Kai Friesecke and crew Riley Legault, and skipper Derek Poon-Tip and crew Belle Strachan, with each team sailing in a head-to-head race against the other teams in a round robin format.
Glassy conditions and light wind over the weekend allowed just two of the four scheduled round-robin races to be completed.
"We had a really competitive group, so the quality of racing was excellent, but I sure wish we had gotten in more," said head coach John Pearce. "We would have loved the opportunity to take a few more." The event also served as Sailing Parents Weekend, with families, friends and alumni in attendance. "Overall, it was a great event," said Pearce. "We had a great group of parents and alumni come back, really enjoying the scene and just celebrating the growth of the program."
Next up for the Colonials is a trio of regattas this coming weekend. GW will send sailors to compete in the CJ Woolum Regatta, Navy Women's Regatta and St. Mary's Team Race.
